The Padang

Considering how newly independent countries have generally tried to erase all of their colonial past, the feeling of the empire remains is however surprisingly intact in Singapore. The historic green space in front of the City Hall is called Padang, which in Malay means field. The Europeans used the Padang back then as a field for cricket. The game is still played here. In fact the Singapore Cricket Club is set up at the western end of the Padang. The Singapore Recreation Club is at the other end of the field.
