THE NATIONAL FLOWER

Vanda Miss Joaqium was first discovered in the garden of Miss Agnes Joaquim in 18933 and registered in the same year. It is a natural hybrid between V teres and V hookerinana. Among the several varieties of Vanda Miss Joaquim, the variety "Agnes’ was chosen to be the National Flower of Singapore in 1981.

The Orchid can bear up to 12 buds and is about 5cm wide and 6cm tall. The petals and dorsal sepal are pink with shades of violet while the lateral sepals are almost whit.

Orchids have become a central feature of Singapore’s National Dress in recent years and are now a common sight at both formal and informal occasions.
