Tan Kim Sengs Fountain
The
Tan Kim Sengs fountain has been on the Esplanade in front of the Padang, surrounded
by a steel enclosure. The pretty cast-iron fountain was unveiled in 1882 in Battery Road
near Fullerton Square, just outside the business hub: Commercial Square. It commemorated
Tan Kim Sengs gift of $13,000 to the government for a better town water supply. It
took almost 20 years to finish the waterworks, and its benefactor did not live to see its
opening.
