Tan Kim Seng’s Fountain

The Tan Kim Seng’s fountain has been on the Esplanade in front of the Padang, surrounded by a steel enclosure. The pretty cast-iron fountain was unveiled in 1882 in Battery Road near Fullerton Square, just outside the business hub: Commercial Square. It commemorated Tan Kim Seng’s gift of $13,000 to the government for a better town water supply. It took almost 20 years to finish the waterworks, and its benefactor did not live to see its opening.
