Singapore River.

The early history of Singapore revolves this River. It was then known as a trading outpost of the island. This is where the early immigrants found there jobs .There are   6 bridges along this river.

 

The first is the Cavenagh Bridge which was constructed in 1868,.It is Singapore's only suspension bridge named after Colonel Sir William Orfeur Cavenagh, the last India-appointed Governor of SIngapore. It is the 3rd bridge to be built and the oldest to be maintained in its original splendour. Before you cross the bridge, look over the left reilings where you will find a family od Kucinta cats or known as SIngapore's river cats, recognised as one of the smallest breeds of cats in the world. The Cavenagh Bridge was originall named Edinburgh Brifge because it was used for the first time when Duke of Edinburgh visited Singapore.

Cavenagh Bridge  

 

Elgin Bridge was built in 1925 and mnamed after the governor General of India Lord Elgin then. It is the first bridge to be built across the river.Coleman Bridge was completed om 1886 and named after its architect George Drumgold Coleman. It is the fourth bridge to be bulit asnd has 8 lamp posts. Read Bridge and Ord Bridge are another two bridges. The Read Bridge was named after William Henry Road an outstanding businessman and legislator while Ord Bridge was named after the first governor of the Straits Settlement to be appointed by the Colonial office in London, Sir Henry St. George Ord.

The above picture is Boat Quay. Here, there are many buldings as it resembled the concaved bellly of a carp and is believd to be a spot where prosperity snd wealth lay. Hence, in the olden days, many immigrants wanted to erect their shophouse there.
