Animals of the Belize Rainforest:
The Red Eyed Tree Frog

Red Eyed Tree Frog is a slender, fragile frog with webbed front and back legs. They are three inches in length. The body is a bright green with some pale blue lines on its side. Like most amphibians, it relies on water for a good portion of its life. They eat a variety of small invertebrate. In the forests of Belize, it tries to camouflage itself by resting underneath leaves and tucking its legs up close to its body.

They breed from October to March, usually near their temporary or permanent ponds. The male fertilizes the 25-50 colorless eggs as the female lays them on a leaf over standing water. In 5 days, the tadpoles slide down the leaf to the standing water below them. It then takes the tadpoles 75-80 days to metamorphose into a frog. The adult frog will spend most of the rest of its life in the forest canopy, often hidden among bromeliads.
