Maracuja (Passion Flower)

The Passion Flower is called Maracuja in the Amazon. It is found almost everywhere in the tropical and semitropical zones of South America and North America. The over 200 species of Passionflower are the most commonly found plant in the Amazon region, and is called Passiflora edulis. Maracuja is a long wide vine that can grow up to thirty feet in length and will climb up, over other plants. It's large white flowers with pink or purple centers is a very good edible fruit. It was the flowers which gave the Maracuja its nick name, the Passion Flower because the Spanish missionaries thought they had something to do with the Crucification of Christ.
