The Slow Loris

The Slow Loris is about the same size as a small rabbit, with a length of about 10 - 15 inches and a weight of about 3 lbs. The Slow Loris has a color variation from ash-gray to white with a dark dorsal stripe and dark rings around the eyes. An infant is gray with silvery-white limbs and hands when first born, but when it is about 11 weeks old it will start to look more like an adult. When first born, a Slow Loris will cling to his mother's belly. The Slow Loris is solitary and nocturnal. The male territories often will overlap the territories of several females. It eats mainly fruit and eats an occasional insect or bird egg. Slow Lorises hang upside-down from branches by their feet so they can eat with both hands!
Many Slow Lorises lose their habitats and are captured for pet trade and these are their primary survival threats. It is estimated that there are only 1 million Slow Lorises left in the wild, and many of these live in protected areas. The Slow Loris has been known to live up to 20 years in captivity where as in the wild it is less.
