Karate is a Japanese word meaning "empty hand."
It is the martial art of unarmed self-defense
in which focused blows of the feet and hands
are dealt from poised positions. Often, these
blows are accompanied by shouts.
Karate emphasizes self-discipline, positive
attitude and high moral purpose. It is taught
professionally at different levels, and under
different Asian names, as a self-defense skill,
a competitive sport and a free-style exercise.
Karate will make its debut as a medal sport at
the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg,
Canada.
