The Dragonfly

For the study of the gliding flight and the impact flight aerodynamics as well as the efficiency of natural, four-bladed drive mechanisms, a remote controlled spirit level model with mobile wings was developed, whose flight characteristics are to be examined first in the wind tunnel.

With a next model one tried to achieve a faster flapping of wings frequency of the model of approx. 18 cycles per second. As special feature, this second model was equipped with a variable adjustable phase shift between the flapping of the wing pair of the front and the back.

Central and long-term target is, to investigate the performances and areas of application of drives with wing mechanisms and to compare them with the efficiency of technically established propellers and rotors.
