Site introduction

Though pundits claim that the earth is "shrinking" due to increased communication, inter-cultural exchange to date has been superficial at best. A clear-cut example can be found in in the humanities curricula of Western educational systems. Western art education has for years held its Euro centric focus, in many instances excluding even the briefest mention of Eastern art. This web site, The Art of Japan, delves into the relatively unknown realm of eastern art. It explores in detail some of the many aspects of Japanese art, covering diverse topics ranging from the most traditional styles of painting to oddities of architecture. This site five distinct sections based on types of Japanese art: origami, architecture, gardens, paintings, and sculpture. Included with each section are multimedia features including photo galleries, puzzles, and quizzes. Browse through this site and explore the world of Japanese art.

Although Chris, Ben, and Andrew all reside in Palo Alto they found it almost as difficult to meet as people living across the country or even the world. Each member was gone for over a month during the summer, and had various responsibilities to attend to when they returned home. Chris went to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois for a summer journalism program; Ben traveled through Italy and France with family and friends; and Andrew worked at a children's center in Argentina. This site was the product of a week and a half of cooperative work and it the result of true collaboration as each team member has different strengths.

Chris has a great design sense and technical skills. He's a perfectionist, but not overbearing about it. He enjoys coding html and creating graphics. In accordance with his hobby, Chris took all the photographs (by the Team) that appear on this site. He will be a senior this year in high school.

Ben is a multitalented worker, with a combination of skills encompasing knowledge of Macromedia Flash 4, HTML, various graphics programs, and a design sense comparable to Chris's. Ben did all of the Flash seen on the site, activating the CGI scripting, and graphical manipulation. Ben will be going into his freshman year of College, with plans to major in computer sciences, and possibly a second in English or Design.

Andrew brought his love of writing to the site. His knowledge of HTML and Java were helpful to the site but he spent most of his time researching and composing many of the reports which appear on the site. Andrew will be a senior in high school in this coming year.
