Cleopatra

Most people know the ancient story of Cleopatra. She was the last queen of Egypt. She had two very famous lovers, Marc Antony and Julius Caesar. Cleopatra is also famed to be a very good looking woman as well as intelligent. All these things are the traits which people believe to define Egypt's last queen. How many of these "facts" are true?

Actually not very many of the attributes listed above describe Cleopatra. Cleopatra may have been the last queen of Egypt but she was by no means an Egyptian. Cleopatra was a Greek from the line of Ptolomy, one of Alexander the Great's generals. She is famous for her supposed love affair with Julius Caesar an Marcus Antonius. It is not likely that either of these men loved Cleopatra, what they loved was probably her money. Cleopatra was not a very beautiful woman, she had what many modern historians call "the Ptolomy Nose". In other words our lovely queen had quite a large snout. Almost all of our modern myths about Cleopatra are completely unfounded and false. She did not wear her hair in bangs as is portrayed in all of the movies about her "life". The final myth that I shall dispel is that she  died for her love of Marc Antony. She committed suicide because she had no wish to be paraded through the streets of Rome.
