Section 2 - What is Genetics

Genetics is the study of how behavioural traits are inherited by offsprings from their parents. In the middle of this century, O.T. Avery, C.M. MacLeod and M. McCarty demonstrated that DNA was the genetic material in cells, which opened the floodgates for more research. The diagram below shows how genes may be "passed down".

Gene Diagram

The father's gene, represented by the red cells, and the mother's gene's, represented by the blue cell, can come together to form six kinds of combinations. Blue - Purple, Red - Blue, Purple - Red, Red - Red, Blue - Blue, and Purple - Purple.
