I will take no responsibility for any damage to your data or you computer, do these maintenance options at your own risk. You should NOT attempt any maintenance options while on-line.

Scandisk

Light Scan

Click on START, then PROGRAMS, then ACCESSORIES, then SYSTEM TOOLS and finally SCANDISK.

This will bring up the scandisk program. First off you should do this procedure at least once a week.

To begin with click standard test. Next click on advanced and click these boxes. Display summary :
Always (This will show you any errors)
log File : No Log (What this does is it writes a *.TXT file of the summary, no point having it unless you want it)
Cross-Linked files : Make copies (This is a bit complex to explain)
Lost file fragments : Delete (Removes unrecognizable files)
Check Files for : Click every option here
Click Ok and click on Standard test, and then click Automatic Fix errors

Click Start to begin. This will run a light scan over your Hard drives files system and detect any file errors and automatically fix them. It will give a report of what was fixed.

Thorough Scan

This time we will do a more thorough scan to detect any problems with the file system AND and problems with the Hard Drive itself.

To begin with click on Thorough scan. Next click on advanced and click these boxes. Display summary :
Always (This will show you any errors)

Check Files for : Click every option here
Click Ok and click on Standard test, and then click Automatic Fix errors

Click Start to begin. This test will take awhile around ½ of a hour or more. This will display any problems with files and Hard drive errors. If you come up with a bad cluster on your hard drive it could mean you hard drive is bad and dying, then you may need to buy a new hard drive. You should do this procedure around once in 1-3 months
