I have made an interview with a specialist in a zoo in Bern (Daelhoelzli). I intend to show you that the wolf is a normal wild animal and that nobody should be afraid of him.
I:
Recently one has heard that the wolf will be back in Switzerland soon and
it is also seen already in our mountains. The frightened people want to
know more about this beast of prey, because there was at all times a fear
against the wolf.
Is
it possible that the wolves may become a danger potential for us if we
stay in their territory and meet them probably?
Mr. A. Büchler: Any animal defends itself if it has no possibility to flee from us.
I: Does one assume that some specimen approach the suburbs and meet us?
Mr. A. Büchler: The wolf is a very shy animal like nearly all wild animals. He hears almost 3 kilometres with his ears. And if we let him enough carrion and game then he comes not to "our" region.
I: How should farmers and mountain farmers behave, whose cattle are threatened by the wolves?
Mr. A. Büchler: The best possibilities are the herdsman or a dog which watches over the sheep or then a fence around the herd.
I: Isn't there any danger that the wolf exterminate other animals which live in liberty here in Switzerland (like chamois)?
Mr. A. Büchler: That's only a danger if the human being disturbs the balance in the nature.
I:Isn't it a good solution if we tell the hunters that they may shoot off some specimen if there is an high increase?
Mr. A. Büchler: It would have to be regulated the same way like with the rock goat, probably.
