Skill: Dribbling

To the spectator this part of the game can be as artistic as a well-executed shot on goal. By being able to master the ball with the feet in tight situations a player can place the opposition at a disadvantage through taking away the numerical superiority defenders usually have.

Many qualities are essential to dribbling, including pace, strength, stamina and determination, but balance is vital. It enables them to ride tackles and still get through. It enables them to evade unfair challenges, to retain possession when the odds are against them. Use any part of your body for holding off challenges, your hips, shoulders, buttocks or your arms to ward of defenders.

The object of the dribbler will be to set the defender up, get him off balance, unsettle him and then leave him behind. Some players will aim to defeat their opponent by a sudden movement of the body.

A change of direction must be followed immediately by a change of pace. Defenders will recover from mistakes quickly, and therefore it is important for an accelerated phase to accompany the change in direction. Continuing at the same pace will allow the defender to challenge a second time.

All players should be inventive, creative, and prepared to take risks. The ability to take on and beat other players by dribbling is a positive attribute for a player to possess.
