Radiology is the
study of disease through imaging.
Diagnostic radiology is a medical specialty which was born shortly after
the discovery of x-rays of Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895. The
first radiologists were trained in the use of x-rays for both the diagnosis
and the treatment of disease. During their first 50 or so years, diagnostic
radiologist had only x-rays with which to produce medical images. The
last 30 years have witnessed the development of the nuclear medicine:
ultrasonography, CT scanning, and finally MRI.
In the 1960's the specialty was divided into Diagnostic Radiology and
Radiation Oncology (radiation therapy).
These new imaging methods permit doctors to visualize regions of the
body previously accessible only through exploratory
surgery. They have given birth to a new subspecialty: interventional
radiology (image-guided percutaneous biopsy and intervention). Some
radiology departments are now called Diagnostic
Imaging.
