The
Temple of Edfu
The
city of Edfu lies half way between Luxor and Aswan on the site of the ancient
city of Djeba. Located 100 km south of Luxor, and 53 km south of Esna,
it is home to the best preserved, and largest Greco-Roman temple in Egypt,
the Temple of Horus. The reason for this being the fact that the town of
Edfu and the Temple are built on a rise above the river valley, meaning
they escaped the numerous floods of the past. Like the Esna Temple it was
also built by the Ptolemies in the second century BC, and is very similar
in style. The temple is open from 6am to 6pm. Admission is 8LE (half for
students). Transsportation from Luxor to Aswan, and vice versa, are bound
to stop at Edfu. Buses, trains and the Peugeot taxis can take you from
Luxor (2 hours by bus or taxi) or from Aswan (1 and a half hours by bus
or taxi). Unlike Esna, there are places to stay in Edfu.
