The Asian rainforests are one of the best places to be, if not
for the massive deforestation and destruction going on in them.
The rainforests in Asia are no stranger to trouble. Civil
unrests, wars and forest fires occur one after another, never seem
to stop. A good example would be the Indonesain rainforest. Just a
few decades ago, the casual vistor to the Sumatran rainforest would
be able to spot without difficulty, orang utans swinging from branch
to branch, busy preparing their nocturnal sleeping platform of
branches. But today, due to the raging forest fires in Indonesia and
the civil unrest that has plagued the region, Orang utans are now a
very very rare sight.
It is very hard to estmate how many more animals like the Orang
utan have died and how many more have become endangered in the
Indonesain turmoil still going on today. But it is sure that if
nothing is done to conserve the animals and their habitat, everyone
of them would be extinct even before we realise it.
