It is not known when the Zulu tribe came into existence but it is thought it originated in about the 1620’s. However until Shaka came into power it was a relatively small and generally peaceful tribe, numbering only about 1700 members.

Shaka came into power in 1816. He rose to fame quickly and this is well documented. One important fact that Shaka’s rule precipitated was that he joined all the clans of Zulu land under one name. Shaka was assassinated in 1828 by his half brother Dingane.

However the Zulu nation is not only renowned for Shaka. The wars in the mid 1800’s against the British and the Boers attracted world attention.

The Zulu nation still exists and its monarchy remains intact.
