Swimming is an individual sport, and it is also a team sport. Both men and women can participate. It is highly competitive and requires a great amount of fitness and stamina.

There are also many outdoor events, which take place in the ocean, or lakes, or rivers. Swimming is mainly a summer sport but it can take place in winter. This is usually in an indoor heated swimming pool.
There are many events in a swimming gala. There are individual races, medleys and relay races. Each event is timed and it is every swimmers ambition to win the gold medal and break the world record.
