Hockey

Hockey is a Winter Sport that can be played by both men and women. Hockey is played at School Level, University Level, National Level and, finally, Veteran's Level. Hockey is a game that requires am immense level of fitness and excellent ball skills.

Hockey is played with a hockey stick and hockey ball. The hockey stick is wooden and is long with a hook at the end. Hockey can either be played on grass or astroturf. There is also a form of hockey called Indoor Hockey. This hockey stick is much shorter and lighter than the normal hockey stick. The turfs are extreme;y different to play on. Astroturf is a much faster game, and shows off the player's skills more. The size of the field is 100 yards by 50 yards.

There are eleven players per hockey team. This is including the Goal Keeper. Hockey players can be sustituted onto the field at any time. After being taken off the field, the player can be re-substituted onto the field. Each match is seventy minutes long. Each half is thirty five minutes long. The players swop sides after each half.

There are two umpires controlling the match. There are many rules in hockey, and each has a specific purpose. This is to prevent injury and to control the match. There are three types of Penalty Cards. A green card is a warning card, and the player may remain on the field. A yellow card is a penalty card, and the player must leave the field for twenty minutes. A red card is a penalty card and the player may not return to the field.

Hockey is a sport that is becomming increasingly popular in South Africa. More and more people are choosing to play hockey. The amount of spectators at any game is increasing as more people want to know about hockey and support our National Side.
