Many
are the composers who, throughout the centuries, have written
pieces for the violin that will not soon be forgotten. Thanks
to them the violin has become the most pre-eminent of soloist
instruments.
«
In the past the great violinists were not only interpreters
but also composers. Corelli, Vivaldi, Locatelli, and later Paganini,
Sarasate, Wieniawski, Vieuxtemps, Ysa˙e, Kreisler and Enesco
all played their own music.
As from the end of the 19th century composer and violinist ceased
to be one and the same person. J. Joachim and Brahms were to
turn a new leaf, distinguishing between the functions of creation
and of interpretation. »

Menuhin, "La légende du violon", p.128, Flammarion, Paris, 1996)
