> Welcome!

Enter the fascinating world of the violin...

Four-stringed musical instrument tuned in fifths, played with a bow, and held between the shoulder and the chin.

(G D A E)

It is hard to believe that this small instrument, made of simple pieces of wood cut out and glued together, consisting of only four cords, and whose sound range and volume are relatively low, has acquired such prominence in the world of music. The prodigy is one of the incomprehensible phenomena of the history of mankind!

This web site has been created with the aim of unveiling the mystery behind the violin; going into its history, its manufacture, discovering the composers and musicians who play it, and learn how it is played. Our presentation will include the other members of the violin family (strings) as well as some scientific information.

The violin, which developed from its primitive form of fiddler’s instrument to accompany singing and dancing, reached an unequalled level of perfection in only a few decades. It became, in the hands of great musicians, the preferred instrument for expressing creative imagination.
The violin indeed was to prove itself both as a solo and as a concert instrument.

It is no easy task to speak equitably of the immensely rich history of the violin, nor of its music and its masters. We shall attempt, however, to cover the basic elements related to the vast complexity of what is denominated "violin".

> How is the site organised?

The subject is divided into 7 sections as follows:

1) history > discover the origin of the violin as well as a complete chronology of its history and its great masters (violin makers).

2) manufacture > meet the violin! Follow the miracle, step by step, from the first piece of spruce to the fitting of the strings...

3) musicians > get to know the violinists who made the violin popular and especially the great composers.

4) playing > discover the technique and the peculiarities of violin playing through the rudiments for better understanding the position of the violinist!

5) family > a short presentation of the other strings that make up the famous violin family.

6) science > for the science goers... A look at the tone (sonority) of the violin in the light of acoustics.

7) about > to introduce ourselves and mention our sources, references and links on the web!

We wish you a visit full of surprises and discoveries in the fabulous world of the violin ;-)
