Nenets (34,7
thousand)
The main ethnic area is located in the Nenets autonomous district of the Arkhangelsk region, the Yamal-Nenet
autonomous district of the Tyumen region and the Taimyr autonomous district of the
Krasnoyarsk region. The language concerns to the Uralic group. It is subdivided into two
dialects: tundrical, on which speaks majority of the Nenets, and woody. Nenets have the
literature with the Russian alphabet bases. The traditional economic activity includes a
deer breeding, a hunting, a fishery. Faiths: Animism and Shamanism. |

Evenki (27,3 thousand)
The main ethnic area is located from the left bank of the
river Yenisei up to the Ohotskoe sea and from a polar tundra up to the rivers Angara and
Amur. The language concerns to the Altaic group. The traditional economic activity includes a
deer breeding, a hunting. Faiths: Animism, Shamanism
Khanty (20,9
thousand)
The main ethnic area is located in the basin of the river Ob.
The language concerns to the Uralic group. Khanty are the most characteristic
representatives of the Ural anthropological type, to which Mansi, Selkups and Nenets
concern also. The traditional economic activity includes a hunting and a deer breeding. Faith: Animism. |

Evens (17,2 thousand)
The main ethnic area are some areas of Magadan and Kamchatka
regions, Okhotsky area of Khabarovsk region and the northeast areas of Yakutia. They speak
Even language ( Altaic group ). By the origin and culture they represent the northeast
branch of Evenki. To the moment of their entry in Russia Evens wandered along the
Okhotskoe Sea. At the 17-19-th centuries they were settled along the northeast part of
Yakutia, in Chukotka and Kamchatka. The traditional economic activity includes a deer
breeding and hunting, a fishery and the seal hunting. In the beginning of the 19 century
they were converted in Orthodoxy, but have saved a number of the old faiths –Animism and
Shamanism. |

Chukchi (15,2 thousand)
Chukchi are the indigenous people of the Chukotsky autonomous
district of Magadan region, live also in the north of the Koryak autonomous district and
in some areas of Yakutia. They have their own language ( Paleoasiatic group). To a moment
of their entry in Russia their traditional economic activity includes a deer breeding, the
seal hunting, a fishery and hunting deers. Chukchi have saved his old Faiths (Shamanism,
trade cults), the mythological epos.
Nanai (12 thousand)
The main ethnic areas are the rivers Amur and Ussury. Their
number in the territory of the Russian Federation is 10500 persons, 2000 persons live in
China. Speak Nanai language ( Altaic group). The traditional economic activity includes a
fishery and a hunting fur animals.
Koryaks (9,2 thousand)
The main ethnic area is Koriak autonomic region of the
Kamchatka peninsula. They speak Koriak language
( Paleoasiatic group). Have the modern literature with the Russian
alphabet bases. The traditional economic activity
includes a fishery, a hunting and a deer breeding. Faiths: Animism, Shamanism
Mansi (7,6 thousand)
The main ethnic area is the river Ob. The language concerns
to Uralic group. They are representatives of the Uralic anthropological type, to which the
Khanty, Selkups and Nenets concern too. The traditional economic activity includes a
fishery, a hunting and a deer breeding. Faithss: Animism, Shamanism
Dolgans (6,9 thousand)
The main ethnic area is Dolgan-Nenet district of
Krasnoyarsk region. The language is the dialect of
Yakutian language. The
traditional economic activity includes a fishery, a hunting
and a deer breeding. Faithss: Animism, Shamanism
Nivkhs (4,7 thousand)
The main ethnic area is the Far
East of Russian Federation : Khabarovsky region and island Sakhalin. Speak Nivkh language.
It is assumed, that Nivkhs are direct descendants of the most ancient population of the
island Sakhalin and of the river Amur. The traditional economic activity includes a
fishery and the marine craft. They have the settled image of life. Officially they were
considered as Orthodox, but saved traditional faiths (Shamanism, the cult of nature, the
cult of a bear).
Selkups (3,6 thousand)
The main ethnic area is Tomsk , Tyumen region and
Krasnoyarsk region. They are subdivided into the northern Selkups, living in
woodth-tundra, and thesouthern Selkups.
Speak Selkup language (Uralic group). They have the literature, based on the Russian
alphabet. The Russian language is used also. By their image of life and culture they are
like their neighbors Kets and Khanty. Faiths: Shamanism,
Animism.
Olcha (3,2 thousand)
The main ethnic area is Habarovsk region. Speak Olcha language (Altaic group). They have the literature, based on the Russian grafic. The Russian language is used also. The traditional economic
activity includes a fishery and a hunting. Faiths: Shamanism, Animism.
Itelmens (2,5 thousand)
They are included in the population of the east part of the
peninsula Kamchatka. Speak Itelmen language (
Paleoasiatic group). The traditional economic activity includes a fishery, a hunting fur
and marine animals. Faiths: Animism, Shamanism.The large part of Itelmens assimilated with
Russians.
Udegeyts (2 thousand)
They are included in the population of the Far East of
Russian Federation. Speak Udegeyt language (Altaic group). The traditional economic activity includes a
fishery and a hunting. Some groups had primitive agriculture. Christianity poorly
concerned Udegeyts, they saved traditional faiths (Shamanism, the faith in spirits, the
cult of a bear).
Eskimos (1,7 thousand)
The main ethnic areas in Russia are Chukotka
autonomous district, island Vrangel. Live also in Alaska, in the north of Canada, in
island Greenland. Speak Eskimos language (Eskimo-Aleut group). The traditional economic activity includes a fishery, a
hunting marine animals. Faiths:
Animism, Shamanism.
Chuvans (1,5 thousand)
This people does not exist nowadays. Chuvans assimilated with
Chukchi.
Nganasans (1,3 thousand)
The main ethnic area is Dolgan-Nenet autonomous
district. They have the literature, based on the Russian
alphabet. The language concerns to the Uralic group. The traditional economic activity includes a
fishery, a hunting and a deer breeding. The traditional faiths are Shamanism, Animism. |
