The mammoths hunting.
Hunting
mammoths was not a simple action. It was very difficult to kill such giants. Dense skin,
with some centimeters of thickness is difficult for splitting even by a modern iron axe.
And the ancient hunters were armed only with stone axes and spears with stone tips. That
is out of the question to openly attack herd or even a separate mammoth. Then a mammoth
could break the Human in halves with one movement of his powerful trunk, and to spread him
on the ground as an insect by the shock of his leg, and then he was still armed with a
pair of large tusks.
Our far ancestors invented very artful methods of hunting on these czarist animals.
Sometimes hunters dag a huge hole along a mammoth track, then they put into the bottom
vertically pointed logs, covered a hole with branches and grass and arranged an ambush
nearly. Fallen a trap, the animal could not move out and became not such dangerous. It was
possible to kill the wounded animal with big stones and spears.
To tell the truth, this method was possible to use not everywhere. In many places
of Siberia in The Ice Age a ground was frozen very low from a surface, and it was
impossible to dig a hole. In such cases Humans learned to build a heaps from pointed logs
on the tracks, which were fixed on trees or on a ground so, that an animal began to fell
and filled up the trap or pierced him by pointed parts if he passed along this place. The
wounded animal weakened fast and became an easy victim to get.
Sometimes Humans arranged large battue hunting. They enclosed herd or separate
animal, then simultaneously set fire to a grass, loudly shouted, swinging torches and
moved to a herd. The circuit of hunters was arranged so that in one place there was a pass
between them. Panic aroused, animals were frightened; they ran to that party where there
were no hunters. Just there they found death. In this place usually there was a breakaway
or a small swamp. Lost of senses, animals fell from steepness or sank in a bog and not any
more could move out. Such battues could be arranged for mammoths too, but more often
Humans hunted so for smaller-sized animals, living by large herds - on bisons,
horses, saigases.
There were also other methods, for example, an animal could be wounded with a
poisoned weapon. It was possible to catch a weak sick animal or drive him away from a
herd. For example, it was possible to wound an adult mammoth in a least protected place.
The ancient hunters knew customs and habites of animals very wel and invented
most diverse methods of hunting.
