Text: The string sextet is one of the best works of Tsjaikowsky, though underestimated (yet?) It is always in balance, which is not the case in all other chamber works. The structure of the work is solid and has no weak spots. So my judgment is short: this music has all the good qualities of Tsjaikowsky's without the bad ones. Listen for example to the fuge in the final movement. Also the 3rd movement is outstanding as Tsjaikowsky exceeds all the other Russian composers of the 19th century in varying a theme (a great theme!) only by harmony. But one has to be careful: to my opinion the arrangement for string orchestra is not satisfying at all, as the intimacy of the sextet is completely lost. The themes are not suitable for a work of large(r) scale.
