Text: This is an enormous work lasting about 50 mins in two
movements. It is very dark in mood and needs virtuoso playing to
carry off - the penultimate Allegro variation in the second
movement in particular requires a lot of energy and accuracy from
all players. There is a recording by Kremer, Argerich and Maisky on
Deutsche Grammophon that is a remarkable experience to listen to,
and gives a very good idea of the demands - and potential - of the
piece. Tchaikovsky wrote it as a tribute to the late Anton
Rubinstein and his feelings of anguish are made very clear at the
close of the work.
