Completed in 1839, the Piano Trio in d, Opus 49 by Felix Mendelssohn was heralded by fellow composer Robert Schumann as being the "master trio of our time". This beautiful and captivating piece is filled with catchy themes and very unique styles. Although Mendelssohn has sometimes been criticized for overusing his themes, we feel that the Piano Trio in d does not seem repetitive at all. In our opinion, this is definitely one of The Fifteen Greatest.
Mendelssohn's Piano Trio contains one of the hardest chamber
music piano parts ever
written. The piano part is not only technically difficult, but it
is also hard to synchronize with the other string instruments;
consisting of the violin
and cello. We're sure that
you will quickly recognize the incredible difficulty and skill
required to play this strenuous piano part.
