Based on a popular German dance form, this movement is "a
triumph of whimsical humor", as one analyst put it. The first four
bars pretty much sum up the soul of the entire movement:
lighthearted, graceful, and most of all happy. There are many
charming moments here that will probably just make you want to
smile. For instance, there is a wonderful variation in sixteenth
notes where the violin goes scampering about its range. There is
also a delicate section near the end where nearly all momentum
stops as the instruments have a simple conversation, completing
each others' phrases.
