Text: The Op.57 piano quintet can be played joyously and is then
very attractive. Is this consistent with the composer's wishes? He
sometimes told performers not to use vibrato or a full tone.
Despite its naive appearance, the quintet has quite complex
thematic references from one movement to another and visits very
improbable keys. The homage to J.S. Bach is easy to see. Was this
quintet intended to be an ironic or sarcastic work hiding behind a
childlike facade?
