Schubert Piano Quintet in A, D667 "Trout"III: Scherzo. Presto
It was customary (almost mandatory) that composers inserted a light
Scherzo-Trio measure into their symphonies and chamber works, so
Schubert created this little gem to be the central movement of the
Trout Quintet. Looking at a formal outline of the movement, it looks
just like any other movement of its kind, yet Schubert still found
places where he wrote like only he could. For example, it was customary
to have a literal repeat of the first theme; Schubert, on the other
hand, writes out the first theme twice abd allows it to "drop" into
the key of C major the second time around. The Trio section also has
a nice "Schubertian" diversion as well, where the music takes off into
a dreamy sequence of floating
harmonies.
