Text: Dvorák's "Slavonic" Quartet contains a wide variety of moods and emotions, especially evident in the Dumka movement. The quartet was written in the mid to late 19th century. The work is a constant conversation between all members of the quartet, with almost dance-like melodies. In general, the piece is characterized by very smooth dynamic changes; however, these are broken up with very contrasting stark dynamic changes in the dance-like sections. To master this piece, the string quartet must learn to keep the unimportant voices soft yet projecting to produce the lush background texture needed for the songlike melody. Plucking all four strings in the cello like a Bohemian folk guitar also adds to this backdrop.
