Text: This quartet is the most challenging of Dohnanyi's but the extra effort is worthwhile. The whole piece dwells in a world of chromaticism which makes intonation especially tricky, but is entirely accessable for the listener. The slow movement, a theme and variations, is especially rewarding, with a wonderful viola part to boot. The last movement is possibly the most dated, but very interesting.
