Text: My quartet has recently been working on this one, and it's spectacular! The usual rap on early Beethoven quartets is that they are too plain and Haydn-like to carry much of that much-beloved romantic emotion. So imagine our surprise when we first played through the ominous opening, building up to the wild, impassioned chords... and then there's the beautiful solo work throughout the whole work, and some pretty clever textural and harmonic writing from the Master as well. This one I definitely going straight to the top of our preferred repertoire...
