So let's start at the very beginning...what is chamber music? The World Book Encyclopedia defines it as "a type of music written for small groups of musicians." Well, that's a pretty simple definition. Did we really have to make a whole website about THAT?
In a word, yes. Ever since the 18th century, chamber music has been one of the most important forms of musical expression. Because of its intimate nature, chamber music has often been the most revealing works created by composers. Other times it has been a workshop for creative experimentation. Chamber music has often been the source of new musical ideas and attitudes.
With the Music Chamber, we've tried to create the most complete resource possible for the exploration of chamber music as a whole. Our tour begins with broad topics such as instruments and historical periods. Eventually, we get into the details about individual composers and even commentary on individual works. Along the way you'll come across volumes of information, many helpful links to outside resources, and over seven hours of music exclusively recorded by us for our site.
You can freely browse the site using the menu bar at the left if you are looking for something specific. We also recommend that you follow the silver links at the bottom of each page. These act as a guide through the major sections - they won't take you to every single page, but they will give you a grand tour of what's important.
One more thing: before you go on, you may want to check to see if you have all of the browser capabilites, plug-ins, and fonts to view this site at its best. That's not to say that the site won't work without these things, but they help to enhance the overall effect.
