Paul Rosenbloom
rosenblo@ISI.EDU -- Researcher, University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute.
~What is your particular speciality in Artificial Intelligence?
My work focuses on integrated models of intelligent behavior that combine
capabilities for problem solving and planning, memory and knowledge, learning,
communication and interaction, etc. (what is now sometimes called "intelligent
agents" or "virtual humans"). My work also covers other
areas such as machine learning,
production systems, planning, and cognitive modeling.
~Why did you choose a career in AI research / development?
I found the problem of building human-like intelligent systems fascinating
and
important, the ideas underlying AI intriguing, and the work fun.
~What is the AI system you are researching/developing designed for?
Most of my work is focused on the Soar architecture, which is intended
to
provide both the basis for building integrated intelligent systems and
a
unified theory of human cognition.
The biggest application of Soar at this point is to the construction of
pilots
and commanders for virtual aircraft.
~What is most exciting part of AI that encourages you stay in the field?
Progress on putting all of the pieces together to generate virtual humans.
~What subjects would you encourage high-school level students to take, who
are interested in AI?
The physical and social sciences plus mathematics.
