Global Warming: The Global Interactive Debate Corner

So you think nature is the main culprit for Global Warming.

However we think that...

Argument That Human Activity Is Mainly Responsible For Global Warming

Until the late 1995, few people were certain that human activity could be a likely cause of the warming of the Earth, even the stretch of very warm years in the 1980's and 1990's may be only the effect of a swing of the natural climatic pendulum. However, a recent report from the IPCC has said that there has been increasing amount of data and analysis to suggest that global warming over the last century is entirely due to natural causes.

CHART 1

Amid the natural variability of temperature, Chart 1 suggests that the warming of the last century and especially since the late 1980s reflect a pattern of response to human activities.

As for the sun-climate theory by Eigil Fritis-Christensen and Knud Lassen which suggested that our climate is affected by the solar variations, it was not without its flaws. David Thomson of AT&T Bell Laboratories tested the theory but concluded something quite the opposite. What Thomson did was to examine the relationship between the average annual temperature over the last 100 years and the temperature difference between winter and summer. Now, if the sun's brightening effect is indeed warming the Earth, both seasons should be warmer but because summers get a larger share of the increased solar heating, the summers would be warmer than the winters. Or to put it more scientifically, the amplitude (the range between the average and extreme temperatures) of the seasonal cycle should increase.

CHART 2

However, the result of Thomson's testing contradicted the sun-climate model proposed by the Danish side, as shown by Chart 2. His testing showed that after 1900, while the Northern Hemisphere warmed by 0.6 degrees Celsius, the amplitude of the annual cycle gradually decreased and the pattern in the Southern Hemisphere was about the same.

Thus, it is likely that human activity plays a very significant role in inducing global warming.

Furthermore, below are arguments of supporters supporting our stand.
