Its modified hair or spines are its most important adaptation for defence. Porcupines cannot shoot their quills at their enemies, as most people think. Instead, they ram their quills into them. Because their quills dislodge easily from their bodies, the porcupine are able to escape, leaving their enemies in pain. The quills on the tails are hollow.

It can be found on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. It takes refuge in ground caves, rock cracks and under fallen trees in the day and look for food in the night.
