This animal is active in the night and in the evenings. To announce their presence, all civets mark their territory by "civet". "Civet" is a component used in the production of perfumes. Because of this, the Malay civet has been bred widely.
It is found in Malaya, Sumatra, Borneo and Philippines. On many small islands of Southeast Asia, it has been released into the wild outside its natural habitat including forests and grassland. It stays in dense cover by day and comes out in the open at night. It is not a good tree climber and is normally found on the ground. It usually lives in holes in the ground dug by other animals and can be found near villages.
