This Web page enables the viewer to visit the German School New York (GSNY) in real time 3-D. By choosing one of the team members’ school as the object of the project, the team hopes that a growing number of students may become familiar with a powerful interactive media which makes it possible to build a scene ("world") in 3D space coordinates and then, using a special VRML browser or plugin, to view and manipulate the scene on the monitor. The project wants to demonstrate that Virtual Reality for the Internet can be applied to anything that needs a visual interpretation, such as architecture, science, art, products, entertainment, and anything else one can imagine.
The “world” file was created in the 3D modeling program Caligari trueSpace 4. The textures were taken by a digital camera and cropped in Adobe Photoshop 4.0. The Web page was written in Microsoft Wordpad. (thanks to the coach who taught the team HTML)
The GSNY is a private school attended by students from Kindergarten
age on, enabling them to obtain an American High School diploma, but also
to leave school with the German Abitur exam. The school is located in White
Plains, NY, but you don't have to travel there because you can visit the
school right here on this web site. Have fun!

Here is a map of the German School. (click to enlarge)

Now that you are familiar with the German School
in general, Id like to introduce you to VRML. VRML stands for Virtual
Reality
Modeling
Language.
A 3 dimensional object can be converted into a VRML "world". A world can
be seen in most web browsers, if they have the appropriate plug-in. This
world can then be seen by anyone and manipulated in real time, just as
if it were a normal web page.
Around the file there will be controls, which vary
depending on the plug-in, which can be used to turn or move through the
object(s) on screen.
Below you see a list of recommended plug-ins for web browsers. These
are just plug-ins I think are good. If you can see the 3D cube below, then
you already have a plug-in.

One more thing. Once in the German School, you will notice many white sheets hanging on the walls. These Sheets are provided for student artwork which can be displayed in the school. If you have a picture (hand drawn, computer drawn...etc) please send it to this e-mail address: peter@hatten-o2.rockefeller.edu Peter is in charge of the world and will put up any pictures you send to him. (and you will be given credit)
So now that you know what to expect, click on the link below to actually view the German School New York in 3D!

Attention: if you cannot see the world, for any reason,
we also have a "fly through" movie of the school. You can see it as an
MPEG.
