Contemporary view

Now it's all in the past, however some American interventions are ghostly similar to Vietnam. The conflict in Kosovo was such an operation but fortunately was ended after 2 months. The Russian influence is not so considerable as it used to be and they have less allied countries. American politicians now often criticize the Vietnam War, but not heavily. According to a post-war opinion, the war went off without appropriate planning and the Americans had a wrong warfare. Kissinger went further and said his opinion about an important attack, where they tried to cut the supply of the Vietcong, the Ho Chi Minh trail, but failed it: "The plan of the invasion in Laos was born in despair and confusion." People also try to understand the governments of that time: "Nobody thought that if Ho Chi Minh's party won, he'll appear with his troops."

People has already forgotten the demonstrations and the mistakes of the politics. But Vietnam remained in their memories. Everybody knows that a long and unpopular war was taken place there. Today, it's not a topic of conversation, but veterans organize meetings and commemorate. They remember that dreadful war. Although the ratio of the survivors was 82%, there were 10 thousand amputations and military police had to be founded since 20 thousand soldiers were nursed because of Hepatitis or drug overdose. 5 thousand of them died. Soldiers coming home were still young. Many of them started the university as a veteran. The word 'veteran' make people think about old people, but veterans from Vietnam could be only 25 years old. Many of them can't return to the society and their memories are very difficult to forget.
