[Foreword] [The war] [Army] [City life] [South]

The South Vietnamese people

People in South wasn't as unified as in North. There was no togetherness, the South Vietnamese government didn't take care about it. In the beginning, many subversors went to South from North and they affected people to change side, so North had a pillar in South Vietnam that helped the Vietcong (VC). The other camp was the supporters of the capitalism that was behind the South Vietnamese regime assisted by the USA. The rest was impartial people, who, however, wasn't in large number.

The VC was a group of people, who claimed the union of Vietnam. It's officially known as South Vietnamese National Liberation Front that was named as VC, the rebels while North considered them as freedom-fighters. They demand the implementation of the Geneva Agreement, the overthrow of the Diem and his successors' regime, the withdrawal of US advisors and infantrymen and the social revolution in South Vietnam, that is the introduction of the idea of communism.

The VC was mainly dominant in the countryside and in the dull outskirts of the cities. They had their own underground tunnel systems that was well camouflaged. An innocent hovel with an elderly lady inside might have been a center of the VC or a water carrier 12-year-old boy might have been VC as well. It was impossible to recognize them. In addition, they were supplied by North Vietnam, mostly by the Ho Chi Minh trail.

The anti-Communists were their enemy. These people lived mainly in cities. The young men served in the South Vietnamese army and they lived their life. In the Tet Offensive in 1968, they were the victims of the attackers. After the fall of Saigon, many of them emigrated abroad, most of them to the USA. Those, who stayed at home, were sent to re-educating camps.

The number of the impartial people wasn't too much as above-mentioned. The ruling political system was all the same for them, no matter that it was communist or capitalist. They just cultivated their land, bred their animals and lived their life. Those, who lived in the countryside might have helped the VC unintentionally e.g. by putting someone up.

In South Vietnam, life was more peaceful, except some blowing up of VC bombs and the military operations, such as the Tet Offensive or the final attack in 1975. Thanks to the US, South Vietnam had a better economy than North. South wasn't carpet bombed, wasn't attacked continuously by the US Navy and the US Air Force. Moreover, South was supported by millions of dollars. Today, South Vietnam is as same as North. The ideology of communism and the anti-Americanism are taught in schools. Due to the lift of embargo in the early 90s, the economic contact started between the States and Vietnam. We just hope that people will be able to live together and forget the stain of the past.
