The fall of South Vietnam
By the withdrawal of American troops, Vietnam wasn't united. North hasn't overthrown the government in South Vietnam that was supported by the USA. Since only one nation fought in the war, the whole vietnamizing was completed, the war was named as civil war from that time onward. The USA wanted to form Southeast Asia's strongest army from the South Vietnamese troops with modern American armaments and with 1.1 million personals, while Ha Noi planned to finish the war in two years time.
In March, 1975 the attack against South Vietnam started. Tay Nguyen, the strategically important plateau was conquered and North Vietnamese troops marched southward. The pace was faster than expected so the supply was a small problem but was quickly solved. On 18th April, American citizens started to flee. Three days later president Nguyen Van Thieu resigned who was also forced to resign by the South Vietnamese public opinion. The rich in South Vietnam have already left the country. The American ambassador has escaped. On 23rd April, Gerald Ford announced the end of the war, although the last American left Vietnam at 7:53, 30th April. The DRV's army has arrived in Sai Gon. The South Vietnamese president, Duong Van Minh surrendered unconditionally on the 29th April. Sai Gon fell without blood. Only the refugees' brawl for a place on a helicopter might caused death. Many people celebrated the victory of North Vietnam.
On the 2nd May the whole country was freed. In 1976 North and South Vietnam united and formed the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. In 1977, the USA and Vietnam tried to get connected diplomatically, mainly Jimmy Carter, but it was failed because of the influence of the Soviet Union.
