R. M. Nixon
Richard Millhouse Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California. His career in politics started in 1947 when he was elected to be a republican representative in the Congress and was in office till 1950, then he became the Senate of California till 1953. During the Eisenhower administration, he was the Vice President. He lost the presidential election in 1960 against Kennedy and became attorney till 1968. In 1969, he succeeded Johnson and was elected to be the 37th President.
The winding up of the Cold War started when he had came into office. After three years of negotiations, he signed the SALT-I. agreement that limited the military weapon systems. In the same year, the relationship between the USA and China was set straight. Visiting Mao Ce-tung in Peking, withdrawing the troops from Taiwan, he admitted the Republic of China as the official China. In 1972, he was re-elected. As the result of the pressure of the public opinion, in 1973 he withdrew American troops from Vietnam. That was the end of the long-lasting Vietnam War that raised more and more national and international protest. In 1974, he involved in a row blew up over tapping the democrats in the so-called Watergate-scandal and had to resign in 1974.
He lived absolutely solitarily till 1984, then became the critic of the Los Angeles Times.
