Charles de Gaulle
Charles de Gaulle was born in 1899 in France. Like the most politician in the first half of the 20th century, he began his career in the army. During the World War One, he served as an infantry officer and was captured at Verdun, thanks to his height, 6 foot and 4 inches, which prevented any escape. He devoted himself to the study of French military tactics and theories. Later, he became Secretary General at the Council of National Defense, where he began to question many of the doctrines the French were employing. He wrote several theoretical books. He was one of the earliest authors who thought that the most effective way of defending is based on the armored troops and on the airforce. But the conservative politicians didn't agree with him. During the World War Second in May, 1940 he could reach lots of local success while the other troops where withdrawing everywhere. In June he became the deputy Minister of War. He refused the capitulation that's why he emigrated to London. Formed the Committee of Free France and organized French armed force. After North Africa was liberated his center moved to Algir. After the landing of the Allies in Normandy formed caretaker government. From October, 1945 he became the Prime Minister of the fifth French Republic. He resigned a year later because he refused the thought of the military dictatorship. He formed a civil right-wing party, but after the election in 1953 he dissolved this because they didn't managed to win. He retired. In 1958 he appeared in the political life again and formed a government with the key words of national unit, public order and French bigness. Later he was elected to be the president of France and till 1972 he held this position.
In the foreign policy of France he always demonstrated the independence and military force of his nation, he created a military arsenal, then turned out from the military organizations of the NATO (1966). In those international conflicts like in Cuba, Israel etc. he was on realistic point of view, but he didn't sign the nuclear test-ban.
De Gaulle expound the view of the French government in the question of Indochina as well. This was a little bit closer to the French, since before 1954 Indochina belonged to France. He judged the US that after the Geneva agreement aimed for the ex-positions of France in South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. He stated that the only way to restoring the peace in Southeast Asia is the conference of the 14 powers that had signed the Geneva agreement.
In April, 1969 he resigned of the presidency when the referendum refused the reforms of the Senate. The 70 years old politician entirely retired.
