Hostillius & Gallus: 251-253 After the crushing victory of the Goths, the legions for once took a back seat to the senate. The son of Decius Hostillius, and a decorated commander Gallus, where elected as new emperors. Illyrium was still menaced by the Goths and the emperor Gallus was forced to buy the barbarians off. After Hostilianus died during an epidemic, the sole shame of paying tribute to barbarians was placed upon Gallus. Even after this humiliation the fighting did not stop; instead of the Goths, other tribes invaded and took their place. Security was finally restored by the quick actions of a provincial governor, Aemilianus. He unexpectedly drove all the barbarians out and gave their tribute money to his soldiers instead. As a result, he was declared Emperor by his legions and by Gallus's legions who killed their old leader.
