Internet
is an extension of the Network System to the entire world.
It is an electronic highway that connects various networks around the
world. These networks belong to
government agencies, universities, libraries and big business houses.
Having been connected to Internet, a user can send messages (electronic
mail), share files and search a database. A
database is a collection of related information.
Like any of the information service, the Internet is also a pay-for-use
system.
In
order to be connected to the Internet, a user needs to be linked to a Local
Service Provider and open an account with him.
Then, he can approach the Provider’s computer by means of a modem.
The Provider’s computer is connected to the Internet. So, through it, the user also gains access to the Internet.
In
order to follow how the Internet system works, go through the following steps
that explain what a computer connected to the Internet system has to do to get
information through this system.
1)
A user has to use a program called telnet to get access to the other
computers on the Internet.
2)
To gain access to another computer, the user has to type the address of
that computer. This address is
called hostname.
3)
Soon, it is on-line and in link with the host PC.
4)
When the link has been set up, the user types in commands to make the
system do what he wants – view available files, upload a message, download a
file etc..
5)
The user can also gain access to the news group to get information on a
particular topic.
6) When the user is through his job, he logs off (disconnects) the link and ends up the access.
