A group of well-known writers visited Mafikeng last week to compile unique book on the siege of Mafikeng. This book will be a collectors’ item.

The writers included acclaimed Boer War writers Thomas Pakenham and Brian Willan. They were joined by South African writers and publishers. Pakenham is a specialist on the Boer War and Willan on Sol Plaatje. Various places mentioned in their work were visited and lots of research done to make sure that this book is another authority on the siege of Mafikeng. The writers took great care to sort out between facts and fiction. They also visited the Molema family who knew Sol Plaatje well and the Montshiwa house where Sol Plaatje lived during the siege of Mafikeng.

The book will consist of various articles and Prof Frans-Johan Pretorius of the university of Pretoria will be the editor. The book is supported by Harry Oppenheimer, great cousin of Cecil John Rhodes. The publisher is the Brenthurst Library.
