Were the Surname Plaatje Came from. Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje were born in 1875 near Boshof. He went to school in Pniel near the Vaal River. While he were a postman in Kimberly he wrote and passed the Cape Civil Service Certificate and moved to Mafikeng as court interpreter. He kept a diary during the Mafikeng siege that were later published as The Siege of Mafeking (1984). Between the years 1904 to 1917 Plaatje
edited the Koranta ea Bechuana a Tswana-English weekly. He moved back to Kimberley were he
establisged the Tsala ea Batho newspaper. Solomon were a writer in format he wrote numerous articles for newspapers, wrote two works in Tswana and work fir the African National Congress (ANC) as genral correspondence secretary. He also translated A comedy of errors and Julius Ceasar into Twana. A house was presented to him in Kimberley by the community he served. He died in 1932. |
