He was the grandson of President Paul Kruger
and the son of Cmdt. Sarel Ellof who led the burgers at Rustenburg.
He was a 26 year old police lt. In Dec. 1896 when he was send from Krugersdorp to investigate the roomers of the Jameson attack, he was kept in captivity by Jameson for a short period when released he made a alarm after which the commando's was called up. At the beginning of the war he was a captain in Northern Transvaal and later at Mafikeng. After he was captured at Mafikeng he was send to Deadwood camp on St. Helena island. There he became a hero by escaping twice but he had to surrender twice because it was impossible to leave the island.
